SBHC’s address health problems that can block success in school or lead to serious problems as adults. Numerous evaluation studies of school-based health centers, including an in-depth evaluation of Maine’s centers by the Muskie School of Public Service (2004), reveal high levels of satisfaction with the services on the part of students, parents and school administration and faculty.
Also, research studies indicate that SBHC’s improve access to acute and chronic care and significantly reduce emergency room visits. In addition, studies show significantly improved compliance with preventive health measures, improved control of asthma, and fewer school days missed due to illness. There is also an emerging research indicating that school based health centers positively impact academic performance.
